Sacredness of Human Life

Beyond The Pews for Life Africa support a clear and biblical view upholding the sanctity of human life not only for the unborn but also for women, families and all people at all life stages. Thus, all our actions and our ministry partners and ministry volunteers are grounded in and consistent with Scripture.

What the Bible says that we are convicted to uphold

It is from the Scriptures that we derive our charge to uphold the sanctity of life from conception.

All humans are made in the image of God (Gen. 1:27), and therefore have inherent dignity and inestimable worth. People are described in Scripture as the work of God’s hands (Eph. 2:10; Job 34:19; Isa. 29:23; 64:8), having been formed by him within the womb (Ps. 139:13-16; Job 31:15; Isa. 44:2, 24; 49:5; Jer. 1:5). Therefore, to perform an abortion on an unborn baby is to strive to undo a new and precious work of our Creator.

The Scriptures also teach us that within the womb, life is already to be recognized and valued. The biblical narrative accounts record the active personhood of Jacob and Esau, wrestling in their mother’s womb (Gen 25:22-23), as well as John the Baptist, leaping for joy in the womb at the approach of the unborn Jesus (Luke 1:41-44). To deny the personhood of the unborn, or to say that life begins “at first breath” is to ignore the truth of Scripture in this matter.

The Old Testament law provides guidelines for the hypothetical situation in which two men are fighting and a stray blow causes a pregnant woman to give birth prematurely (Ex 21:22-25). In this scenario, the life of the mother and child are considered worth protecting by placing a penalty upon the unwitting assailant if any harm has been done. If just by accident, harm to a mother and unborn baby merits just punishment, we must consider that the performing of an elective abortion would likewise be an unrighteous act in the eyes of God.

Given the worth of the unborn and the atrocity of abortion which has as its victims both the helpless child and the often vulnerable mother, mandates in the Scripture for the church to care for the single mothers (James 1:27; 1 Tim 5:16;) and for the righteous to seek justice and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Micah 6:8; Prov 31:8-9) compel us as believers to action. We should advocate for laws that protect the mother and child, and should consider the role of the church in providing support to mothers who are in vulnerable situations that have them contemplating abortion.

We work in a variety of ways to support a culture of life that reflects a comprehensive and holistic affirmation of the sanctity of human life. Teaching our children the values and biblical mandate of chastity before marriage, the sanctity of life and the tragedy and sin of elective abortion.

The Beyond the Pews for Life Africa supports a biblical, moral, and ethical respect for life and has maintained the sanctity of human life as a public policy priority in Kenya. Offering foster care and adoption services, medical support, and family resources for hundreds of pregnant women in distress need.

We also facilitate Christ-centered pregnancy testing, prenatal care and counseling in areas of finance, adoption and abortion alternatives, making referrals to residential crisis pregnancy and birthing centers where available.

Depending with the case we come across, we engage in a loving manner with abortion-minded women through referrals from our partners in this noble mission. This includes: self, our home based care providers, churches, healthcare provider partners, schools or police stations who refer cases to us or on our personal Outreach programs. At this level we endeavor to share the good News of Jesus Christ by giving hope for abortion thinking pregnant woman and meeting her spiritual, physical, relational and practical needs. Our approach is by meeting the immediate needs of a new mother we come across.

Assessment Stage

Once a new abortion pregnant woman shows up and feels hopeless by her prevalent circumstance we meet with her to dig deeper on her situation and how we can be of help to her. We be begin by confirming the state of the pregnancy first, risks involved and immediate health attention needed, get her out of such danger or risk either physical or medical. We then offer practical support to move her from crisis level to a more stable or empowered level.

Counseling Stage

At this stage, we prefer to engage with abortion pregnant woman in an open, loving and caring conversation to learn more about her and discover what brought her to the crossroads of considering an abortion as the only option. We are interested in what her story has been thus far. We then provide practical solutions for the challenges she’s facing, opening her mind to a wide range of views and even better alternatives available. Once she chooses life, we explore her situation and how we can assist including walking all the way with them. The abortion pregnant woman receives encouragement through our holistic approach: Spiritual, Physical, Relational and Financial. At this level, if need be we engage relevant institutions and expertise through referrals on need by need basis.

Mentor’s Stage

During this mentor’s walk, we understand the obstacles are many: bills, food, gas, childcare, budgeting, job, and transportation. We are there to help overcome some of these obstacles, help the pregnant mother get on her feet and find a place of hope and community—thereby changing her story. At times, the obstacles involve more than a financial need. Some women have to fight to end an addiction or want to deepen their new faith or even health issues. We strive to provide emotional, spiritual, and relational support in addition to assisting with their basic needs. Women come to us from all walks of life around with the intent to abort their child. We do this by walking alongside her to help her realize how much she is loved by God and to recognize her need, just as each of us have, for a Savior in Jesus Christ. We pray and petition our branch church networks and individuals who are willing to enter into this journey of mentoring and disciplining these courageous women once they have made the option for life to come forward more so the teenage pregnant mothers for periodic counseling, reviews and monitoring pregnancy until full term.

Empowerment Stage

Loving and Helping others as stated in 1 John 3:18 “Our love should not be only words and talk. No, our love must be real. We must show our love by the things we do.” Is fully effected at this stage.

Here, we provide physical and practical resources and tools to equip and empower her walk to next level towards personal empowerment goals and mother for her child. We commit to help the woman that have considered abortion and have chosen life and her family at their point of need upto atleast one year. We are not ashamed to say we want that story to change for better! We pray for the trajectory of each woman’s life to be shifted and lifted through the hope and love of Jesus Christ.

I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Psalms 91:1-42
